What is Yoga

Yoga is an ancient mind, body, spirit practice that originated in India.

Although people know yoga mainly for it’s postures, the main focus originally was breathing and meditation as a route to harmony and inner peace.

It has many benefits. Yoga will give you an injury free supple body and reduce anxiety because it synchronizes breathing with movement. It will also reduce blood pressure and give you an overall sense of well being.

The ultimate goal is self- realization. Which is seeing who you really are and therefore uniting with the universe.

The various postures and breathing open and balance the energy centers known as chakras.

The Chakra System

Chakras are energy vortexes that run along the spine. There are seven chakras, each one has a different purpose, but they all connect to each other.

The Seven Chakra’s starting from the lowest are…

Root Chakra (Muladhara)

This chakra is at the base of the spine, it makes you feel grounded and secure. It’s deals with our basic survival needs such as food, water, shelter and safety.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

The sacral chakra is just below the navel. It relates to creativity, sexuality and emotional balance. It governs our ability to experience pleasure and enjoy life.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Situated in the upper abdomen, this chakra is linked to personal power, self-esteem and the ability to assert ourselves in the world. When it is imbalanced, you are full of self doubt.

Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Located at the center of the chest, this chakra is the center of love, compassion and connection. When it is balanced we give and receive love in a healthy way.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

This chakra is located at the throat. It helps us communicate and express ourselves. When it is balanced we speak our truth and listen to others.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

You can find this chakra at the forehead, between the eyebrows. it gives you intuition and insight. When it is balanced you see the big picture in life.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)

This chakra is at the top of the head. It connects us to the divine and the universe. When this chakra is open and balanced we achieve spiritual connection and enlightenment.
